The Carmen Rose is situated in the centre of Ribchester adjoining the public car park and the impressive playground. The small village lies on the banks of the River Ribble near the towns of Blackburn, Clitheroe and Preston.
The Village is known for its Roman History as it was originally established as a fort named Bremetennacum in AD72/73 and during the life of the fort a village grew up around it. The fort’s remains can still be seen around the present village and there are still the ruins from the old Roman Baths.
The Carmen Rose is on the site of a hotel that used to be on the outside of the fort. Ribchester was a famous stopping off point for travellers following the the old Roman Road from The Trough of Bowland down through the village, over the river and carrying on through to Yorkshire.
More recently the weaving of cotton and other textiles continued in Ribchester until the 1980s when the last weaving business closed in Bee Mill,
The Ribchester of the 21st Century has a vibrant, exciting feel about it and is home to the annual Ribchester Music Festival, held in June, Ribchester Field Day, also held in June, together with numerous clubs and societies including RATS – Ribchester Amateur Theatrical Society – that stages four plays a year, and the newly formed Ribchester Local History Society. There is an active Tennis Club, Gardening Club, Cricket Club, Angling club, two Book Clubs and an Art Club, among many others.
